“scam” emails saying they will sell me the .com version of my .co.uk domain?

Title: How to Handle Scams About Acquiring the .com Version of a .co.uk Domain

Recently, I’ve held the .co.uk version of my domain for years. Over the past couple of months, I began receiving emails from various senders claiming that the .com version would soon be available and that they could sell it to me. I ignored those messages, but while reviewing my domain registrations, I noticed that the .com version was indeed available, so I decided to purchase it.

What’s going on here? Is there a database of expiring domains that some marketers mine, reaching out to owners of the corresponding country-code domain (like .co.uk) in hopes of a sale? If the answer is yes and I had replied affirmatively, would they have purchased the .com and then sold it back to me at a substantial markup?
